Why buy a cheap copy when you can have the original and the best?

Advantages the Tormek sharpening system has over other machines:

There are a few TORMEK look-alikes on the market trying to replicate the superior nature and benefits of the TORMEK SuperGrind machines. But none of them come close to the features and benefits of the original TORMEK SuperGrind - see TORMEK benefits 1 to 8 below.

Also keep in mind, the TORMEK SuperGrind has been in reliable service for decades, demonstrating it's reliability and performance. But TORMEK do not rest on their laurels, the maker of the TORMEK SuperGrind, Torgny Jansson continues to develop and release new jigs and accessories, continuing to expand the capabilities of the TORMEK SuperGrind. The followers can't keep up.

1. Hardcover instruction book and DVD included.

When you buy your TORMEK SuperGrind machine you don't get a simple instruction sheet or user guide, but a comprehensive hardcover book 'Water Cooled Grinding and Sharpening of Edge Tools'. The book contains 155 pages demonstrating the TORMEK sharpening principals, all jigs and accessories step by step with over 500 very clear illustrations.

In addition, you get a DVD 'Edge Sharpening the TORMEK Way' showing you all the sharpening techniques and jigs in action.

If you want to download a soft copy of the instruction book, you can do that here.

And if you want to view or download the DVD videos, you can do that here.

2. Sharpening stone lasts up to three times longer.

The TORMEK Grindstone has been developed to run at low speed in water. It is ceramically made (sintered at high temperature) and contains grains of aluminium-oxide. The stone grinds very effectively and gives a fine finish to the tool. It quickly grinds large tools, for example plane irons, axes, scythes and even HSS steel. The grit rating is 220 and the grain size is 0.06 mm.

The stone can be graded with the TORMEK Stone Grader SP-650 to a finer surface corresponding to 1000 grit suitable for fine grinding/sharpening. The special structure of the grindstone combined with the continuous flush of water over the edge ensure the surface does not become clogged by ground away steel particles from the tool or worn stone particles.

3. Micro adjustment on the universal tool support.

The TORMEK universal support features micro adjusters for precise height/angle adjustment of your jigs.

4. More torque than any other brand.

The TORMEK 2006 has more torque than all the competitors of this machine design, and is rated for continuous operation.

The reduction of the rpm from the motor to the grindstone is achieved by TORMEK’s special friction drive. The more load you put on the stone, the more the motor shaft is pressed against the rubberised friction wheel, which prevents any slippage. This design, which is patented in Sweden, Germany, UK and USA, is simple, reliable and has an endless life.

Despite its strength, it is very quiet in operation. The induction motor noise level is only:

  • 52 dB(A) - Idling (no load),
  • 62.5 dB(A) - Grinding,
  • 61 dB(A) - Honing and polishing.

5. Fully adjustable Pro AngleMaster angle guide.

The unique Pro AngleMaster angle guide is easier to use and more accurate than other angle setting guides. The one device incorporates both:

  • current blade angle setting measures, and;
  • required angle setting gauge for jig/support positioning.

6. The biggest range of jigs and accessories.

TORMEK have the largest range of jigs and accessories, and as we mention above TORMEK still continue to develop more innovative jigs and accessories for their SuperGrind machine.

7. TORMEK jigs are cast alloy, not folded steel.

No compromises are made on the quality and inherent accuracy and reliability of the various TORMEK sharpening jigs.

8. Three year warranty; Made in Sweden.

The TORMEK SuperGrind machines, all the jigs and accessories are made in Sweden under strict quality control standards.

Some assessments from experienced woodworkers:

What Fine Woodworking magazine said about the Tormek versus a look-alike machine"

"Even when graded to its finest grit, the Scheppach's grinding wheel leaves deeper scratches than the Tormek's does, which means more time at the honing wheel."

Sharpening Machines Test (Feb. '06) by Tim Albers

Traditional Woodworking, UK

“I can grind and sharpen quicker and more accurately using the Tormek, which means I produce more work in a given time – and thus earn more money!”

Jim Kingshott

  Fine Woodworking, USA

“The TORMEK 2000, a new wet grinder manufactured in Sweden, is the fi nest grinder I’ve seen to date.”

Vincent Laurence, Tool Forum. Taunton Press

Wood Carving Illustrated, USA

“As a woodworker and woodcarver for 20 years, I’ve been plagued by multiple bevels on my tools, cutting angles that were too short or too long, and blued edges. After dispensing with silicon carbide wheels, I mounted aluminium oxide wheels on my grinder – white, blue and pink in color. Eventually I abandoned them for a horizontal grinding wheel. It seems I was always searching for the perfect grinding system to put an edge on my tools as quickly as possible. I purchased as many holding fi xtures, but I still felt that I was the victim of guesswork. Recently, however, I discovered Tormek®, and it’s a dream come true – a machine that sharpens and hones with the precision of a surgical team.”

Roger Schroeder

Wood Magazine, USA, wet grinder test

“We chose the TORMEK as the sharpening machine we’d most like to see in our shop. It provides superior results faster and easier than any other machine in the test. And the leather stropping wheel put such a fi ne edge on our tools that they needed no further honing on bench stones.”

Tom Jackson

Fine Woodworking, USA, sharpening machines test

"The [Tormek] system offers a variety of optional jigs and excellent instructions for precise sharpening of just about any tool, including planer and jointer knives, axes, and scissors.

"The clever tool holder offers easy setup and precise results."

“The major difference between the two machines [Tormek and Scheppach], when it comes to flattening backs and grinding and honing bevels, is that the finest grind achieved with the [Scheppach] TiGer is coarser than that of the Tormek. So you'll spend more time at the leather honing wheel removing deep scratches left by grinding.”

Tim Albers

Tony McMaster, Australian boat builder and woodworker

"I bought my TORMEK SuperGrind 2000 around 20 years ago, it's the best purchase I've ever made"

Tony McMaster
